Why bother? What's the fuss?

Our Council says on its website:

The plan shapes how the district will develop over the next 20 years and sets out how much development is needed to support the future population and economy of the district. It is important to have a plan in place so that planning applications and appeals can be considered against local policies.

In a nutshell, the Local Plan defines future land use across the district. Once it's signed off by the Planning Inspector towards the end of next year, we'll have lost the chance to make any real difference.

Cynically put, it maps out the winners and losers and predicts who's going to get dumped on.

The Local Plan Matters

The Local Plan could be make or break for Herne Bay - the difference between flourishing or withering. It will have a huge effect on the number of people living here, the quality of our lives and our sense of community.

There's a widespread feeling across town that Herne Bay often gets a raw deal, being regarded as low priority, an afterthought. A bad Local Plan would set that in stone.

The Local Plan process will go on for about 18 months, and HBM will be reporting the news and tracking developments, with a particular focus on Herne Bay - no surprise there.

Supporting Documents

The Local Plan is a 227 page document, and the background documents consist of more than 3,000 additional pages. Canterbury City Council are proposing to allow us just 8 weeks of consultation, starting in June. Bastards.

[Update: we have been given an extra 2 weeks, so the consultation will run from 20th June to the end of August.]
